How do You Practice Mindfulness?

Lee Michael Murphy:

So Kristel, meditation, I think many of us know that it’s supposed to calm us down. I don’t know how to meditate, to be honest with you. I don’t know if there’s an instructional manual you can give us that would be helpful. But can it lead to increased productivity? Or is it just something to calm you down?

Kristel Bauer:

So there’s been some research that shows even after short meditation, it can help improve attention. So there are a lot of really wonderful benefits to it. And after an eight-week program, of mindfulness in the MBSR course, which incorporates meditation and body scans, and bringing your attention and focus back to the present moment, there’s been positive changes in the brain. So there’s a lot of really cool research out there. And it doesn’t take a long time, if you think about that, like eight weeks, right? And you could have positive changes in the brain like that is, that’s exciting. So as far as how to get started, I think people have trouble because they think like, you need to sit down and you need to do it for like an hour, right? Like I said, and that is just not practical. It’s overwhelming. So if you approach it, okay, I’m going to meditate for five minutes today. Start there, and then maybe you can build your build up to a 20-minute practice, but sitting someplace quiet. That is like a comfortable place; you could sit on a cushion, you can sit in a chair, and focus on your breath, you let your thoughts kind of pass like clouds, the goal is non-attachment. We get attached to our thoughts all the time, and we create these stories. And you know, and that takes you away from the present moment. So it’s allowing the thoughts to pass, focus on your breath. But there are also apps which I think are helpful where that is really good for people who have active minds; I think having a little guidance can be helpful because it can be a little bit overwhelming, like people are like,” Am I doing this right?” And it’s tricky, so I can pass it along to you guys if you want. I have a free 30 day trial for Meditopia, a meditation app that I collaborate with, but people you know are welcome to check it out.
