What you need to know if you want to start a lawsuit

Lee Michael Murphy:

So let’s talk about lawsuits. Matt, you hear it all the time. People say, “I’m going to sue them because they mistreated me.” What does that look like? What is your opinion? What do people need to know if they’re going to go through this process. Is it an easy process? Can we get this thing done in a month? What does it cost?

Matthew McElroy:

Yeah, I’m going to go over all those points,  to summarize it shortly. It’s a horrible process. It’s costly. And it can just destroy you emotionally, mentally, and it takes a lot out of you.

Lee Michael Murphy:

Financially?

Matthew McElroy:

Yeah, because that’s part of the emotion that goes into it, because you’re financing this lawsuit that can be crazy expensive. I mean, the average lawsuit that we see now to take it from beginning to end, let’s say the full cycle from when you start the research, drafting the complaint, and then see it through trial. I mean, you’re talking 100,000 to $300,000, just to get it through. And then that’s not going to count things happen after like appeal and whatever else. You can go all that way, you can win, get this astounding judgment, get $2 million for your client, but then you got to go collect that money. That’s a whole other battle. So it’s like you get through this huge obstacle in some ways, and then an entire other hurdle gets presented. But there’s just so much in the background that you got to know before you decide to go forward with a lawsuit.
