Standing Out in the Interview

Katarina Draskovic:

In terms of what set me apart? I would say one; it was having a network of people, not necessarily that the referral was why I landed the job. I think a referral may help you get the interview but won’t help you land the job you are being interviewed for. I would say how my network helped me was that I reached out to so many people before my interview and said, Can you help me with interview questions? What are some things that I should focus on in terms of preparation? What should I say versus not say? What is Google looking for? I think another thing was during the interview; I focused on what sets me apart. I worked at all these other tech companies before so I have the experience, but I wanted to express who I am as a person.  What unique attributes do I bring to the company and to the specific program that I was going to be part of, and then also making sure to highlight my struggles during the interview process?

I discussed how difficult my first few weeks at my university were, that it was super hard for me to switch my major so many times, how I had a tough upbringing and childhood, and all those things. And then my tennis background, so something that I think a lot of times in interviews, we just focus on trying to answer the question the way we think the company wants us to hear us answer it, but these big companies are looking for unique applicants. You can’t be the same as 100 applicants that they already interviewed. What sets you apart, and what’s different about you than everyone else. So yeah, those are some things that I think helped me, and of course, I attended all the events when Google came to campus, I kept in touch with my contacts. On Friday nights, when my friends were at parties and doing all these other fun things. I was in my room submitting apps, looking at videos about working in tech, taking LinkedIn learning courses, I was taking little steps towards my bigger goal of landing the internship, and then obviously throughout the internship, I worked really hard so that I could be considered for the full-time role.
